Yes.  In fact we encourage people to come and join us on the ride.  For more information on the ride itself Click Here.

Where can I unload my horse?

We recommend one of three locations, depending on if you want to ride the entire route or just part of it.  The first location is across the street from the Porterville Fair Grounds on Olive Avenue.  This is where most riders start.  The second location is at Success Market on Highway 190.  We take a short break there and wait for everyone to get in close formation so we can cross the highway together.  This is a spot we have had people join the ride in the past and there is usually enough room to unload there.  The last location we recommend is at the lunch stop which will be at The Antlers Saloon on Highway 190 above the lake.  We will be making an extend break here and is an ideal spot to either start or even end if you don't want to travel the whole route.

Can I drive my own wagon instead of ride?

Of course.  We used to have several wagons join us and we'd love to see more.  Just about any sort of horse drawn wagon would be welcome.

How do I get back to Porterville after the ride?

You must provide your own transportation.  Please make arrangements for someone to have a trailer ready for you at the spot you intend on ending your ride.  The Antlers and Rodeo Grounds have the most room and are the recommended locations to stop, depending on how far you are wanting to ride.  Please do not plan on riding back down the highway.

What happens to the mail that goes in the wagon to Springville?

From the Rodeo Grounds, the Wagonmaster and his posse escort the mail wagon into Springville to drop it off at the Post Office.  There are usually would-be bandits waiting for us as we enter town and a gun fight is inevitable.  Once the bandits are dealt with, the Wagonmaster personally delivers the mail to the Post Office where it will be sent out as regular mail.  Of course, it will have the Jackass Mail Run Stamp on it, so I'm not sure how "regular" it will be.

Why does the Mail Run raise money each year?

Back in the old days, all we had to do was jump on our horses and ride up the hill.  Nowadays, it requires permits, law enforcement escorts, insurance, bathroom facilities, etc.  As you can imagine, the costs increase each year and we have had to come up with ways to raise funds just to put this event on each year.  It is thanks to the hard-working volunteers and sponsors who want to see this historical event continue that we are able to make it all happen.
